Mathematics at Salcombe Church of England Primary School

 

At Salcombe Church of England Primary School, we are committed to ensuring all pupils develop a deep, secure, and adaptable understanding of mathematics. Our approach is built on the NCETM Mastering Number programme in the early years, followed by the White Rose Maths scheme, both of which align with our Sailing to Success values—encouraging resilience, curiosity, and perseverance in learning.

 

Early Mathematics – NCETM Mastering Number

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we focus on building strong number fluency through the NCETM Mastering Number programme. This ensures children develop a solid foundation in number sense, enabling them to confidently manipulate numbers and apply their understanding in problem-solving.

 

White Rose Maths – A Mastery Approach

As pupils progress, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which promotes a small-step, mastery approach to learning. This ensures children develop conceptual understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in a structured and engaging way. Lessons incorporate concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations, helping pupils make meaningful connections in their learning.

 

Sailing to Success – Embedding Our Values

Our maths curriculum is designed to reflect our Sailing to Success values, encouraging pupils to:

  • Persevere when faced with challenges.

  • Think critically and explore different problem-solving strategies.

  • Work collaboratively, supporting and learning from one another.

  • Develop confidence in their mathematical abilities.
